VAT and GST calculator

Add tax to a net price, or take it out of a gross price, at the rate you type. Use it for VAT, GST, a sales tax or any other percentage. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How the result is worked out

From a net amount: tax = net × rate, rounded half up to the smallest unit of the currency you pick. From a gross amount: tax = gross × rate ÷ (100% + rate) and net = gross − tax, so net and tax always add up to the gross amount.

A withholding or other deduction is worked out on the net amount, or on the amount with tax if you choose that, and taken from the gross amount to give the amount payable. You type its rate yourself; nothing is filled in.

A worked example at 20%

Starting from a net amount of USD 1,234.00 at 20%: tax comes to USD 246.80 and the gross amount to USD 1,480.80.

Starting from the gross amount of USD 1,480.80 at 20%: the net amount is USD 1,234.00 and the tax is USD 246.80.

Withholding and other deductions

Some clients pay less than the invoice total because they deduct a withholding tax or a fee and pay it to the authority themselves. Type that rate in the second box: the calculator works it out on the net amount, or on the amount with tax if you choose that, and shows the amount payable. QuoteBill does not know which deduction applies to you; the rate is yours to look up.

Questions

How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by the rate and add the result: at 20%, net × 1.20 = gross. Choose "Net: add the tax" above and type the rate.
How do I take VAT out of a price that already includes it?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate: at 20%, gross ÷ 1.20 = net, and the tax is gross minus net. Subtracting 20% of the gross price gives the wrong figure. Choose "Gross: take the tax out" above.
What is the difference between net and gross?
Net is the price before tax; gross is the price with the tax included.
